Russian Books - Learning the Language

The New Penguin Russian Course.
In our opinion, this is one of the best Russian course books available. The only disadvantage is that there is no audio-cd.
The books starts at the very beginning level. The grammar explanations are very good, progressively introduced through-out the book.
The book does not attempt to avoid, or water-down parts of the Russian grammar. (As some other books do).
Due to the books completeness, it is quite suitable for self-learners. Texts and dialogues are translated in the key (not all other books provide translations). There is also a relevant number of exercises.
Conclusion: If you are self-learning offline, this book is highly recommended.

Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian
We think this is the best book/cd pack available. This book goes at a slightly slower pace that some of the others.
It seems to be aimed towards travellers, rather than longer-term language learners.
Hence, it avoids the grammar a little.
If you are a longer-term learner, you may soon find that you need something that covers technical points in more detail.
There is a useful but brief grammer refernce at the back, but otherwise it is hard to refer back to grammar points as the are buried under "friendly" headings.
However, if you also get the excelent "teach yourself russian grammar" (reviewed below), this may not be a concern.
Dialogues are good and are fully translated, the exercises are also good.
This book flows very well making the lessons quite easy to follow. The double-cd follows most of the dialogues in the book.
Conclusion: Also a very good self-learning pack that includes CD (also available as book only).
Probably the most suitable option for people just wanting to learn some Russian to travel. Easy to understand.

Teach Yourself Russian Grammar
This book is excelent. It will accompany any of the self-learning language courses. It will even be a great reference if you are learning in a classroom.
Each page is for a different grammar topic. The left hand side explains it, the right hand side is exercises to help you learn it.
For example a topic will be "Nouns, Genitive Singular".
The book is clear and consise and suitable for those who have just started learning the language.
You could just use it as a reference, or work your way through doing the exercises.
This book is for the more serious learner, but you will find it useful even if you have just begun.
Conclusion: If you are a longer-term Russian learner and you want to learn Russian grammar; get this book.

The Big Silver Book of Russian Verbs
We think this is the best of the verb books. It is also one of the cheapest. It simply contains 555 Russian verbs, fully conjugated in all tenses and aspects.
What makes this book better than the rest, is that there are several (normally about 5-10) example sentences of each verb, plus some idioms.
There are normally even more examples for the top 50 verbs.
There is also a grammar explaination at the front, and some exercises at the back.
It includes both English and Russian indexes, plus indexes of irregular verbs (back) and motion verbs (front).
When you are studying this book can be very helpful.
Conclusion: A great book of verbs for the longer-term Russian learner. Highly recommended!
